Governor Martin O'malley focuses efforts and funds on family violence prevention

.Signing the Order

10.23.08 -- As part of what he said would be a strengthened effort to protect victims of domestic violence, Gov. Martin O'Malley at a news conference this morning announced  $1.8 million in federal funds have been allocated for 63 agencies and organizations in Maryland.

The governor also announced the expansion of the 21-member Family Violence Council to include Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler, Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown, Talbot County State's Attorney Scott Patterson and Vicki Sadehvandi, the executive director of Citizens Assisting and Sheltering the Abused, in Hagerstown. Attorney General Gansler will chair the council and Cheryl Kravitz and Jodi Finklestein will be the vice chairs.

"The prevention of domestic violence and the support for the victims of these heinous crimes -- improving protection, prevention, enforcement and services -- are among our administration's most urgent and pressing priorities," O'Malley said. "We must do all we can to help Maryland's most vulnerable citizens."

The governor said that last year, 52 people in Maryland died as a result of domestic violence, with 20,000 cases reported to police and 41,000 protective and peace orders issued by District Court judges. O'Malley credited the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and its author, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, for making the money available for the 63 organizations.

Group tries new strategy to curb
domestic violence

"This past year in Baltimore, more than 9,000 protective orders were written to try to curb domestic violence.  But state leaders say those orders are just one tool. As Mike Schuh reports, they're putting their heads together to come up with a plan."

Domestic violence is a significant problem

"Progress has been made in combating domestic violence, but in many ways it follows the model of two steps forward, one step back. Zero tolerance and mandatory arrest policies have not proven to be the panaceas they were initially believed to be; significant numbers of women are still abused; men are now recognized as abuse victims as well; and many people still fear that leaving their abuser or seeking help will result in nothing more than public humiliation and increased abuse."

silver spring wife and mother turns hero on the spot

Red Cross Volunteer Cheryl Kravitz and her family were on their way home from BWI airport Thurs., June 13, and stopped for dinner when Cheryl transformed into a super hero on the spot. A woman began choking and no one knew what to do. Cheryl flew into action and was able to use her Red Cross skills to help, and she probably saved a life. Cheryl took the time to get training so she would be ready to help when needed. "That's why the Red Cross is important," she says. "You get training, and then you run to trouble to help instead of running away from it." Are you ready?
